The Papers of E. Jennifer Monaghan contains materials on her years at Brooklyn College and it encompasses her correspondences, conferences, surveys and student evaluations.There are also items that cover her years of study at Yeshiva University and Yeshiva's Ferkauf Graduate School with examinations, notes, syllabi, clinical observations and papers. On view in this collection as well are research materials related to Professor Monaghan's book Shaping Reading Field; there is correspondence with Susan Israel with whom she co-wrote the book and photocopies of the introductory chapter. There are seven boxes of material on Monaghan's creation and involvement in the History of Reading Special Interest Group (SIG), International Reading Association (IRA), and the History of Reading News. There are correspondences, mailing lists, minutes, notes, new member applications, photographs, newsletters, fliers, and posters. There are also five boxes of items all related to Professor Monaghan's book, Learning to Read and Write in Colonial America. There are outlines of chapters, notes, printouts, correspondences, assorted materials on American Indians, slaves, maps, literacy articles sources, references and manuals. Finally, there are seven boxes of assorted notebooks. There is Professor Monaghan's dissertation that she wrote on Noah Webster. There are notebooks of sources for a planned book covering the history of reading instruction in the U.S. from the colonial period until the present. There are also notebooks for Professor Monaghan's book Learning to Read and Write in Colonial America.

E. Jennifer Monaghan received her B.A. and M.A. in Literae Humaniores from Oxford University in England, an M.A. in Classics from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and an Ed.D. in reading education from Yeshiva University. She taught developmental reading as well as ESL courses at Brooklyn College. In 1975 she founded the History of Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association.
